It was abandoned as an active military post in and is now part of the Fort Niobrara. Situated in a narrow, picturesque valley of the Snake River, Merritt Reservoir is 26 miles southwest of Valentine in Nebraska's unique Sandhills.

Refuge open year-round, daylight hours. Visitor center displays information on old frontier fort. Open Memorial Day-Labor Day, daily, 8ampm. Rest of the year, Mon-Fri, 8ampm. Visiting Niobrara National Scenic River is a bit different from more traditional National Park sites.

Lands along the river are privately owned, with the exceptions of Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (landing, etc.), Smith Falls State Park (landing, camping, etc.) and Brewer Bridge Landing. A sturdy trail with a bridge and metal stairs will lead you down to the Niobrara River Valley floor where you can experience Fort Falls. The portion of the Niobrara River that flowed by the Fort and on through the military reservation is now part of Niobrara National Scenic River.
